Spill Kit

All spill kits are not created equal!

Spill kits are designed to quickly help responders control, contain and absorb a spill.  They are packaged in a variety of configurations from portable bagged kits for small spills to large vessel kits.

The “guts” of a spill kit are crucial.  The most common “innards” include conventional absorbent socks, pillows, pads, and PPE all neatly packed in a container that can be used to dispose of the used materials.

Let’s review the different types of spill kits. I would like to start with:

  • Old kits

When spills happen, you don’t want to use an old kit that has degrading “innards”.  Hopefully, you are checking your spill kits regularly especially those that are exposed to extreme temperature changes or stored outdoors.

Hazmat kits contain specially treated hazmat spill response products to absorb high concentrations of acids, bases or unknown liquids.

Like a fire extinguisher is to a fire, an oil only spill kit is to an oil spill.  Oil only kits are used specifically to pick up oil-based liquids without absorbing water-based liquids.

From a small drip to a larger spill, universal spill kits are an excellent solution for most general spill cleanup needs.

When conventional absorbent kits can’t do the job, custom specialty spill kits are absolutely necessary.  These kits save money.  In addition to the traditional “innards” of a spill kit they also contain specialty absorbents that:

  • instantly solidify hazardous liquids;
  • reduce toxic vapors;
  • eliminate the need for additional spill control products;
  • reduce exposure time to toxins;
  • are low in the volumetric increase;
  • and non-leaching.

Custom specialty spill kits make clean up faster and disposal less costly.

It is important for an organization to carefully identify their particular needs before choosing a spill kit.  Nobody wants a spill. However, accidents do happen. Don’t be caught unprepared! Make sure you have just the right spill kit for your needs.
