We were recently asked what we thought our secret to success was in the oil sheen remover and chemical spill control industry. Because we are the little guy on the block, our response was our ability to play to our strengths. Since we don’t have to move through a hierarchy of authority, we can easily be innovative problem solvers.

For example, a client of ours who uses PetroGuard during routine plant maintenance asked if we could help him with oil sheen removal. He mentioned he had a problem in the company’s spillway. He had been using conventional products like oil skimmers and booms to remove oil residue and sheen from the effluent water that flowed into their lagoon. However, when they removed the products, invariably some oil residue would release back into the water. This required additional products and manpower to solve the problem. Since the lagoon eventually ran into a river, he needed something that would remove the sheen completely.

Oil sheen removal can haunt those who manage manufacturing plants, power stations, nuclear power plants, marinas and more. Just in December, a sheen was noticed on the Potomac river. It resulted from lubricating oil that was accidentally discharged and found its way to the river.

The problem faced by those trying to remediate an oil sheen is how thin it is. Conventional oil only boom and skimmers might contain the oil sheen and even absorb it. But the problem lies in the removal process. It seems most conventual oil only booms and skimmers release some oil back into the water, leaving that insidious oil sheen.

Because of our lean business model and agility, we could quickly help our customer. We designed and manufactured a customized oil sheen removal blanket filled with our proprietary oil absorbing solidifying polymer, PetroGuard-D.

Our customer is delighted with the results from using his SheenGuard blankets. He can keep it in place for 3 or more months; it completely removes the oil sheen from the plants effluent water; and he knows that when he removes the blanket, no oil will be released back into the waterway.
