Chlorosilane Absorption and Removal of floating oil sheen on water
It all began with chlorosilane absorption and removing floating oil sheen on water.
One night we were eating dinner and my husband, the founder of Guardian Environmental, said to me “you’re not going to believe what happened today”.
At the time, the two of us were pursuing different startup businesses.
I took a sip of my wine and said, “what’s going on?”
From there he began to tell me about the culmination of two testing projects he had been working on. He was so excited about the results of these two tests and how well his products performed.
The first was for a customer who needed a more effective product for maintenance in their silanes department and a simplified method of treatment and disposal after spills.
The goal was to study PetroGuard’s absorption capabilities on chlorosilane.
The tests proved that PetroGuard formed a solid matrix once it encountered chlorosilane, rendering it chemically inert. More importantly, the chlorosilane was irreversibly encapsulated with no release of chlorosilane or HCL.
This was exciting because it would significantly impact the safety of their labor force and surrounding communities and streamline their safety procedures.
The second testing project was being performed using our SheenGuard oil sheen removal products. The customer needed to capture residual floating oil and oil sheen on holding ponds.
They had been using polypropylene booms and pads which demonstrated a high adsorption capacity, but never completely encapsulated the oil resulting in re-release of oil causing a sheen on the water. This triggered frequent weekly change outs and proved to be hazardous to plant personnel because of flexing and folding of the booms upon removal.
He successfully designed a SheenGuard system with an expected lifespan of 30 days.
After the system had been in place for 30 days, the SheenGuard pillows were removed and cut open, revealing that a considerable amount of absorption capacity remained.
Today most of our SheenGuard systems stay in place for 6 months before the need for change out.
This was a wonderful moment for my husband and his company. Things were really starting to come together.
Though that was 25+ years ago, I’ll never forget his excitement.
Today we are a small, family-run company helping our customers keep their workforce and the environment safe and clean.
If you work with water reactive chemicals and would like to make clean up faster, safer and more cost effective, contact us and let’s talk about PetroGuard.
If you’d like to make your life easier when it comes to dealing with residual oil sheen on water, let’s talk about SheenGuard.
And, if you’d like to read the white papers on these case studies, contact me and I’ll be happy to send them to you. I’m sure you’ll see why many of our customers have been using our products for 20+ years.
