Why are universal pads the most common type of absorbent pad used for spill control?
Because of they are so versatile.
Most warehouses, plants, grocery stores, marinas, etc. have a trolley full of supplies that can be easily accessed should a spill happen. But stocking that trolley with precisely the right type of universal pads can be a difficult task.
Why might you ask? Because there are so many factors to take into consideration and so many brands to choose from.
Universal absorbent pads are called “universal” for just that reason. They can absorb a widespread variety of liquids from water-based liquids to oil. The pads are ideal for catching drips and soaking up spills and will absorb and contain acid and caustic solutions. Universal pads can be bonded or perforated and come in various weights, absorbencies, and sizes for specific job requirements.
Of course, the first two factors that must be taken into account when purchasing universal pads are what type of liquid will be absorbed and how will it affect employee safety. Then as you continue to think through your choice you will want to consider absorption capacity, ease of disposal and departmental budgets.
Here’s a guide to help you choose the most effective universal pad for your spill control needs:
- Look for pads that have dimple bonding to give added strength and durability.
- Choose pads that are perforated. That way the user has the ability to use just the right amount of material required for clean-up.
- They should be made of flame-resistant but will still melt instead of flaring up and can be incinerated as waste.
- Choose pads that can be wrung out for reuse or incinerated after use to reduce waste.
- Select a brand that is known for its light weight yet has superior absorbency.
- Order pads in a gray color to disguise dirt and hide the grime. This will ensure the pad is used to its fullest capacity.
Every choice has cost implications beyond the invoice. For example, if you stock your business with heavy high-capacity pads and the spill is light, you might end up wasting money by not using the pad to its fullest capacity. Instead, in addition to having the heavy weight pads on hand, you might want to consider stocking lightweight yet highly absorbent perforated pads. The user can then easily tear off only what is needed to clean the spill. This will save you money in the long run.
A pad in a light color might look nice in the package and on the floor to your customer or employee. However, it might also look dirty before it has been used to its full holding power and get tossed before it has reached its absorption capacity. Instead, you may want to purchase a gray colored pad. That way the grime won’t show and it won’t be disposed of before it has reached full capacity.
So what type of universal pads do you use? Do you have universal yellow hazmat pads, universal gray pads, a combination of oil only and universal pads? What’s your preference?
